lara review pt. 1

August 9, 2009

happy sunday! i’ve had a nice morning so far. i woke up, showered, made a tasty breakfast, watched some of a weird movie with my stepdad, did my nails, and am now sitting here blogging to you from the love-seat in the living room. i plan on having a relaxing day. i’m going to do some packing for the big move, probably walk to whole foods at some point, and then go out to a belated birthday dinner for my stepbrother. he just turned eighteen! i told my stepdad that he should take him to a strip club instead. but he’ll most likely want to go to this one mexican restaurant that he loves, which means i will most likely be picking up something beforehand from a vegan restaurant to take along. i tend to do this whenever my family chooses very non-vegan friendly restaurants. last night was my little cousin’s birthday party, and i made myself a little somethin’ somethin’ to bring over. they’re used to me bringing over my own food, haha. well i’m not going to eat baked ziti, so what’s a girl to do?! this is what i packed:

baked tofu, forbidden rice (with red bell pepper, onion, and sun-dried tomatoes)

baked tofu, forbidden rice (with red bell pepper, onion, and sun-dried tomatoes)

i just love forbidden rice. there’s an organic cafe near my house with lots of vegan options, and that’s where i first tried forbidden rice a long time ago. they mix theirs with a diced vegetable medley and it is so good. i kind of channeled their idea when i made this dinner. but i believe they use corn, zucchini, shallots, and red bell pepper in their dish.

have i bored you with my irrelevant rambling yet? shall we move onto this larabar review now? yeah? okaaaay, moving on. i’m splitting this review into two parts. i’ve tried three new (to me) flavors recently, and i still have three more in the pantry that i’ve never tried before. so first three, here we go.

BANANA BREAD larabar, fresh blueberries, frozen cherries

BANANA BREAD larabar, fresh blueberries, frozen cherries

this was a hefty snack i ate one afternoon this week. it was pretty filling. i love bananas, but you all know that. i used to adore my mom’s homemade banana bread before going vegan, so i’m still trying to figure out why this lara flavor didn’t call out to me from the beginning! it really has that delicious banana bread flavor. how do you do it lara, HOW DO YOU DO IT?!

the now famous and much sought after PEABUT BUTTER AND JELLY lara

the now famous and much sought after PEABUT BUTTER AND JELLY lara!

for so long now, i’ve been really excited to try this new flavor! for those of you who are not lara obsessed yet, this flavor is actually new, not just new to me. i searched for it every time i went to a whole foods, the co-op, or any other health food store…and couldn’t find it for the longest time! but alas, the magical moment came when i found it at (surprisingly) one of the smaller whole foods markets in my area. i ate this bad boy in the car on the way to my cousin’s birthday party yesterday afternoon. i had to take a picture of the actual bar, because look how cute it is with all of those visible cherries! i really like this flavor. but for some reason i think i prefer the regular peanut butter cookie lara over this one.

chopped apple, freshly sliced figs, cinnamon, banana ss, COCO MOLE lara

chopped apple, freshly sliced figs, cinnamon, banana ss, COCO MOLE lara

this was my glorious breakfast this morning. how fantastic does that look?! it tasted just as amazing. i’ve always seen the coco mole flavor around, but never bothered to try it. it didn’t interest me until mitri mentioned that it’s one of her favorites. WOW! i love it! it’s one of my favorites now too. don’t let the “chili” ingredient deter you from this lara! it’s great. it tastes like mexican hot chocolate. you know…rich, warm, spicey, and packed with a powerful cocoa punch. i also liked that this bar seemed to have a lot of actual almond pieces.

lara review pt. 2 will be posted as soon as i get through those other three bars. which should be soon, since i’ve been so obsessed with larabars lately. it’s weird how they’ve come back into my life with such force! i’ve always liked them, but right now i’m really loving them! if you have any creative ways to eat a lara, please share! other than that, have a fantastic sunday everybody! i leave for my new apartment in ONE WEEK from today!

just some recent grub

August 8, 2009

after giving that “honest scrap” award to some bloggers yesterday, i started to notice the number of bloggers i love but didn’t give it to out of pure forgetfulness. i should have done what shelby did and not hand it over to anybody. you’re a smart cookie, chica. there are just too many people i love in this community to be able to select such a small amount. my life truly has changed since joining wordpress. i’ve met some amazing people, reading your posts always makes me smile, i’m full of inspiration now, i’ve had lots of foodie questions answered, i’m constantly seeing creative ideas, i’m able to give support to those who need it, and i know that i have reliable people who will support me if i ever need them to. i feel like my days would be so empty if i didn’t have each and every one of your brilliant blogs to read. so there you have it. i love all of you. the people i gave the award to yesterday are not my favorite fourteen. they’re simply bloggers i love, who happened to come to my mind at the time. with all that gooey sap said, since yesterday’s post was dedicated to that award, i’ve gotten a little bit behind on photos! now for some recent eats.

brown jasmine rice, baked tofu, homemade curry sauce (the roux recipe from veganomicon's "curried udon noodle stir-fry"), a sprinkle of sea salt, and a side salad of spinach leaves and homemade asian dressing

romaine lettuce, grated zucchini, some leftover sweet potato, evoo, balsamic vinegar, italian seasoning, sea salt

romaine lettuce, grated zucchini, some leftover sweet potato, evoo, balsamic vinegar, italian seasoning, sea salt

i actually ate that entire salad and that entire bowl of brown rice pasta for dinner one night. i think my extra sweaty workout that morning had increased my need for the carbage! the salad was so. good. i will definitely be making it again sometime. every ingredient complimented those delicious bites of cold sweet potato.

plain probiotic soy yogurt with stevia and cinnamon, flax plus, frozen cherries

plain probiotic soy yogurt with stevia and cinnamon, flax plus, frozen cherries

i really like yogurt and cereal together. and with frozen cherries added into the mix, what’s not to love? i love how frozen fruit freezes whatever substance surrounds it. this was an afternoon snack. looks like a breakfast, doesn’t it? haha. sometimes a big snack is in order, sometimes a small snack is in order, sometimes no snack is in order. each day is different. 🙂

acai bowl (acai and acerola puree + light coconut milk) with sliced strawberries and banana, cinnamon, coconut butter, and a sprinkle of stevia

acai bowl (acai and acerola puree + light coconut milk) with sliced strawberries and banana, cinnamon, coconut butter, and a few sprinkles of stevia

this was a breakfast. i felt very brazilian with the acai and coconut combination. sometimes i wish i could eat my breakfasts in places where i feel like they’d fit in. wouldn’t you want to cozy up in a cabin with a warm bowl of creamy oats and a hot cup of tea? or eat some banana soft serve with fresh fruit and coconut butter while sitting in the sand on a tropical island?

corn tortillas (underneath everything), black beans flavored with cumin and nooch, tomato sauteed tempeh, chili-curry baked green beans, sun-dried tomatoes

flax plus with fresh figs and strawberries, cinnamon, and rice milk

well friends, that cereal was this morning’s breakfast, concluding this episode of recent eats! right now i’m at work with my mom, sipping on some coconut water. high quality hydration right there. this afternoon is my cousin’s birthday party. it’s going to be the last time i see my little cousins until thanksgiving! that’s the soonest i’ll be back home after moving away for college! which is NEXT SUNDAY!

have a lovely, lovely, lovely saturday everyone! i hope all of your weekends are going well so far. xo.

honest scrap

August 7, 2009

kailey from peanut butter swirl and mitri from all in the oats both awarded me this:

honest_award

thank you so much! you’re amazing and i love both of you! the people who gave this award to each of you are both pretty smart cookies. and i feel so special that you passed it onto me! apparently this award comes with rules. and they are…

1.) brag about it. (i’ll skip this one because i don’t like to boast! hehe.)

2.) hand it over to seven brilliant bloggers, and link to their blogs.

3.) list ten honest things about myself.

since i was given this award twice, i’m going to take advantage of that, and allow myself to give it to double the amount of bloggers! the fourteen brilliant bloggers i have chosen are (NOT IN ORDER OF IMPORTANCE):

1.) caroline from broccoli hut for always cooking tofu dishes that make my mouth water.

2.) jess from have faith for her inspiration verses.

3.) gena from choosing raw for her knowledge, her welcoming and helpful personality, and her RAWMAZING recipes.

4.) heather from health, happiness, and hope for having such a positive outlook on life.

5.) heather from heather eats almond butter for teaching me how to make groats, coming up with the strangest combinations that actually work, and telling us the hilarious things that CD says.

6.) debbie from oh so ravenous for always being herself, talking honestly about everything, and being an inspiration to all girls.

7.) jenny from peanut butter and jenny for always providing us with a daily dose of comedy!

8.) nora from pride and vegudice, because she makes a lot of cookbook recipes that come out looking FABULOUS, therefore inspiring me to want to do the same.

9.) meg from sunshine ‘n spice for being such a crazy, loving, beautiful person who knows how to live life to the fullest!

10.) holly from the healthy everythingtarian for being such a moderate and balanced girl.

11.) bianca from vegan crunk because…do i even need to give a reason? her food makes me drool! she’s the ultimate vegan.

12.) erik from vegan fritz for answering every question i’ve ever asked him, making kick-ass groats, and sharing my love for soba noodles.

13.) veggie girl (i actually don’t know your first name, lovie!) for making me super jealous every time she posts pictures of her incredible new york eats.

14.) emily from nutritious is delicious for being such a sweetheart and always leaving me the nicest comments!

there are LOTS of other brilliant bloggers who i’m not awarding this to because i know that they’ve already gotten it, but otherwise would have certainly gotten this award from me. i’m sure you girls know who you are!

now for the ten honest things about myself. these are going to be totally random.

1.) i have spacial awareness issues and am constantly bumping into walls when i walk through doorways. not cute.

2.) i can’t take direction, follow direction, or remember direction.

3.) i hate not having a plan, but i don’t like committing to things too far in advance. kind of contradictory, huh?

4.) J.B. stands for jen brooke.

5.) i have a fifteen-year-old brother who has strange nicknames for me such as denver, water, vivian, and jenasis.

6.) i don’t drink.

7.) i think too hard about everything. i’m constantly stressing over something, and i absolutely hate it. i’m over-analytical.

8.) i’m double-jointed in my hip on both sides, and can pop it in and out. some people think it’s funny and some people think it’s freaky.

9.) i have a fascination with blood. i love getting it drawn, and i like to watch it go through the tube and fill up the viles.

1o.) i have a fear of backwash.

happy friday everyone!

but wait. i actually have two more things to say…

1.) if you know that i love/follow your blog, and you’re not on my blogroll yet, please tell me! i will put you on it!

2.) are there any things you’d like to see or read more of on my blog? random suggestions are completely welcome. 🙂

MADE. MY. DAY.

August 6, 2009

found them. bought them. happiness. enough said.

IMG_2736

huge larabar review coming soon because i also have some other flavors that (for some strange reason) i’ve never tried. SO STAY TUNED.

a morning quickie

August 6, 2009

don’t get too excited. despite the title of this post, it’s not dirty…so get your mind out of that gutter! HAPPY THURSDAY! i had a busy day yesterday and only managed to photograph breakfast. today’s post is going to be a short one because i’m meeting one of my best friends in an hour to hang out and say goodbye! she leaves for college THIS sunday, and i leave next sunday! it’s going to be so sad knowing that i won’t see her for so long! she’s my fellow vampire. i’m going to have to watch true blood without her now! video chat will be a MUST. hopefully i won’t cry today! okey dokes, onto yesterday’s breakie. as much as i love groats now, sometimes a warm bowl of regular ol’ oatmeal calls to me. 🙂

1/2 cup oats, 1/2 cup unsweetened soy milk, 1/2 cup water, cinnamon, ginger, 1 packet stevia, nectarine, strawberries, blueberries, pistachio larabar

1/2 cup oats, 1/2 cup unsweetened soy milk, 1/2 cup water, cinnamon, ginger, stevia, chopped white nectarine, sliced strawberries, blueberries, pistachio larabar

but this morning i went back to the groats! and they were super creamy because i blended them with a little bit of light coconut milk instead of water. yum!

coconut groats, ginger-banana ss

coconut groats, ginger-banana ss

i wasn’t in the mood for any coconut butter or nut butter this morning. weird, huh? so i’ll probably start getting hungry soon. but OH MY, ginger-banana ss is the best! i LOVE ginger, so i put a lot. what an amazing combination. so naturally creamy and sweet from the banana, and so potently spicy from the ginger. mmmm, mmmm, gooooooood. 😉

later today i’m going to the DMV because i need a new license. joy. mine is so old and i hate the picture. it doesn’t even look like me. and my height and weight are both incorrect anyway. it also says “provisional” because i wasn’t 18 yet when i first got it. so you best believe i want an updated license! the DMV is such a pain in the ass though. i’m sure i’ll have loads of fun waiting around that place. but my brother is taking his permit test, so i’m kind of excited for that! haha. anywho, have a lovely day everyone! xo.

another hump!

August 5, 2009

good morning!

i’m in a pleasant mood today. probably because i had a great workout and a yummy breakie this morning! but we’ll save that breakie for tomorrow’s post. yesterday i did some more shopping for my new apartment and my mom bought me really pretty bedding. i love it! with each day i’m getting more and more excited for the move. it’s a long drive up, so we’re splitting it into a two-day road trip. last night my mom and i looked up vegan restaurants located in a couple of cities we’ll be stopping in. so now we have a plan for where we’re going to eat on our way there! so fun! today we’re going shopping for a few more apartment essentials, and i’m going to look at hiking shoes as well. i’m pretty sure i’ll be doing a lot of hiking up where i’m going to school. there are such gorgeous trails there, so how could i not?! anyway, enough chitter chatter for now. let’s get to yesterday’s eats! a.k.a. the stuff you actually want to hear about.

we have a new puzzle going on the coffee table now. my mom and stepdad finished that other one in no time! isn’t it pretty? we’re going to frame it and put it up as artwork in my apartment.

happy hump-day!

12, 11, 10, 9…

August 4, 2009

yesterday’s eats:

1/2 cup oats, 1 cup water, cocoa powder, cinnamon, stevia, peanut butter
1/2 cup oats, 1 cup water, cocoa powder, cinnamon, stevia, peanut butter
sweet potato with almond butter, forbidden rice with soy sauce, grated zucchini + cucumber + cherry tomatoes with homemade asian dressing

chocolate jocalat bar and frozen cherries
chocolate jocalat bar and frozen cherries
millet and quinoa, sauteed onion and red bell pepper, avocado, bbq sauce
millet and quinoa, sauteed onion and red bell pepper, avocado, bbq sauce

the last picture is of my dinner last night. avocado wasn’t part of the original plan. i was going to have bbq baked tofu, but when i pulled it out of the oven…i dropped it all on the floor! ugh! i know i could have eaten it, but with every bite i would have been thinking about it sitting on the floor. so no thanks. no kitchen floor tofu for me. avocado to the rescue! tofu and avocado are far from similar, but something was needed to round out the meal and this did the trick.

to switch gears here, my doctor’s appointment yesterday went really well. he told me not to worry about what number my weight is, and that the numbers of my blood results are more important. if i’m eating proper meals, getting the nutrients and nourishment i need, feeling great, and experiencing no deficiencies, then there’s no need to stress myself out. so guess what? i’m not going to! i’m perfectly comfortable weighing what i do right now. i love the way i look and feel. i’m not going to purposely gain just because my bmi labels me as underweight. i have good muscle, and do not look emaciated by any means whatsoever. what did people do before scales? how did they judge whether or not they were at healthy weights? i’m sure they based it off how they LOOKED and FELT. i look completely normal, and i feel spectacular. so in conclusion, i’m just going to live my life the way i want to and eat intuitively. that’s what makes both my body and my mind happy. end of story.

phew. glad that little mess is over with. want to know something exciting? only TWELVE days until i move! oh my god!

a.) scary?

b.) exciting?

c.) nerve-wracking?

d.) all of the above?

definitely d!

have a great tuesday, my lovies!

you had a bad day, you’re taking one down, you sing a sad song just to turn it around

August 3, 2009

what a corny song. but i’m not going to lie…yesterday was a really bad day for me. it started with a breakfast that was really yummy, but a little bit too much for me.

IMG_2691

toasted hemp bagel with pb and cinnamon, raw austrian pumpkin granola, smoothie (carrot juice, fresh blueberries, frozen banana)

a couple of hours later i drank more carrot juice. this was when my day turned to hell. not long after drinking it, i got horrible stomach pains, and for the rest of the day i felt more uncomfortable than i’ve felt in a really long time. i rather have been nauseous and throwing up every five minutes than have gone through what i did yesterday. my stomach bloated to what looked like the stomach of a woman who’s seven months pregnant. not lying. i did a lot of crying and napping, and just felt so awful. i still ate lunch, an afternoon snack, and dinner…even though eating probably only wreaked more havoc on my system. i wanted to eat, but regretted it afterwards. and i was at home being sedentary practically the whole day, which made me incredibly stir-crazy. a combination of the guilt and lack of movement made me feel so horrible mentally, and i psyched myself out. i blamed my stomach problems on having eaten too much the past couple of days, when in reality it was probably just drinking too much carrot juice that made my intestines spaz out. (carrot juice stirs up toxic layers and materials in the colon and intestines.) so anyway, i’ve decided that i’m not going to force myself to eat more food in order to put on weight. i consume a lot simply by eating the portions that i’m used to eating. i see my doctor today, and if he thinks i need to gain some weight, i’m going to try to sneak in calories without adding too much more food. for example by cooking vegetables in a tad more oil, making higher calorie sauces and dressings, taking bigger scoops of nut butters, and having snacks that are small yet calorie-dense. forcing myself to eat more than i want to only makes me not want to eat as much later on…which therefore makes the entire thing counter-effective. i’m going to do what makes my body feel comfortable. i truly believe that listening to my body is the best thing for it. purposely eating more and then feeling like shit afterwards is not worth it. i will for sure give you a re-cap of my doctor’s appointment, but other than that, i’m just going to continue blogging like i used to. no more of this stressful talk! i don’t want anyone to be concerned with my health, though. i promise you that i will take care my myself.

more of yesterday’s eats:

IMG_2694

corn-quinoa pasta, garbanzo beans, sauteed zucchini, creamy tomato sauce (marinara sauce + soy milk)

IMG_2695

acai bowl (frozen banana + 1 sambazon acai smoothie pack) with raw mulberry walnut granola

IMG_2699

middle eastern wrap from a cute vegan cafe near my house

i feel like i need to talk more about yesterday to get it out of my system, but that’s only going to make me dwell on it more. i need to forget about it and continue on with my life. there are much worse problems in the world than my bad day. i hold onto things for WAY too long, and stress myself out so much. it’s not fair to my poor soul! hopefully today will be a better day.

i love you guys! and again…thank you so much for your support on my recent posts, and for the kindness you’ve always given me. it sounds kind of lame, but even though i don’t know a lot of you very well, you mean so much to me! and if there are any people out there who read my blog but haven’t introduced themselves, please do! i love meeting new bloggers, and i welcome all comments! 🙂

have a MANIC MERRY monday!

nom nom nom

August 2, 2009

you guys…i am on SUCH a roll with the eats. yesterday was another day full of food fabulosity. breakfast was a strawberry, cinnamon, and raw almond butter sandwich on a sprouted grains english muffin. with it, i had the other flavor of the raw granola that i bought at the co-op. mulberry walnut! yum! this one is a bit sweeter than the raw austrian pumpkin granola, and it’s really chewy. i love it! i also had a smoothie made up of plain/unsweetened soy milk, fresh blueberries, and frozen banana. i’m getting it on with the big breakfasts.

IMG_2667

[we have a puzzle happening on our coffee table right now.]

for lunch i wanted soba noodles. my favorite! i was going to have them with just veggies and sauce, but since i’m trying to add more bulk to my meals, i thought i might as well bake some tofu to go along with it. i made a creamy sauce adapted from skinny bitch in the kitch’s “savory white cream sauce.” it was soooo delicious. the perfect vegan alfredo. i don’t make a lot of the recipes in skinny bitch in the kitch because i’m not big on faux meats and cheeses, and they use a lot of them, but some of their recipes are SO good. this lunch was amazing. and the sauteed mushrooms and zucchini went really well with it. i could have this meal again and again and again!

IMG_2671

later i snaked on this:

IMG_2675

it tasted like a chai milkshake! this thing cost me $7.89 (packaged raw foods are so expensive!) but i’ve been seeing it at the co-op forever, and have always wanted to try it. so i broke down and finally bought one. it was bound to happen at some point! it was so wonderful and creamy, but now that i’ve tried it i don’t think i’m going to spend another $7.89 on one. i also had a peanut butter cookie larabar a little while later. i love this flavor, even though it’s one of the less raw ones. the texture is so different than the others, and it truly tastes like a peanut butter cookie. i felt like i was eating pb cookie dough!

i was at my grandpa’s birthday party yesterday (he’s 87!) and it was so funny. my brother gave him a playboy and a hustler. my grandpa used to be the biggest player ever. and you should have seen him checking out the magazines. i guess a guy never gets too old for naked girls! so hilarious. i was there until after 6 o’clock, so i didn’t really have time to make myself dinner at home. what did i do? i picked up food from real food daily, of course! look a this delicious spread:

IMG_2681

> salad: mixed greens, grated carrot, grated beet, cucumber, shredded cashew cheese, wheat free blue corn chip croutons, living citrus herb dressing
> corn grain bread with half tahini-miso spread/half 5 spice cashew-carrot spread
> white bean and leek soup

and that’s after transferring the salad to a bowl, and the soup to a mug. there was a whole helping of soup and salad left that i didn’t eat! they gave me so much food! craziest hugh jass salad ever! i swear this took me about an hour to eat. the soup was really, really yummy. it was full of dill, which i really liked. as much food as this was, i was still able to have dessert. boy am i doing my job in the eating department!

i picked out super cute raw ice-creams from whole foods! this company makes so many delicious sounding flavors, but of course i leave with boring vanilla bean and strawberry. haha!

IMG_2684

i haven’t tried the strawberry one yet, but i’m sure i will soon. i ate the entire cup of vanilla bean last night, and it was so rich and creamy. i probably could have stopped half-way through, but i was enjoying it (and you know how i need the calories right now) so why not go for the whole cup?! it actually wasn’t that big (in my opinion, anyway.) it just felt like it was because it was extremely dense. i hate airy ice cream! tomberlies did not disappoint me one bit. i highly recommend it! so folks, this is the conclusion of another delectable day of food in the life of me.

IMG_2686

have a happy sunday! (i leave for my new apartment in 2 weeks from today! AHHHHH! time is a crazy thing! school, what’s that?!)

a soon-to-be “on this day in history” fact

August 1, 2009

it’s official. mark your calendars. yesterday, july 31st, goes down as one of the best food-filled days ever! maybe it was just because i was in a positive mood yesterday, so everything felt like it tasted really good? no, everything definitely did taste really good. whatever the reason for my happy taste-buds, yesterday was a good day! it began with groats and soft serve, of course.

IMG_2639

maple-cinnamon groats, banana ss, a cashew cookie larabar

this was like pie a la mode in a bowl. the larabar was like a chewy crust, the groats were like a delicious cinnamony filling, and the banana soft serve was like the ice cream on top (obv.)

later i enjoyed a nice, cold, refreshing glass of coconut h2o. photographing this was completely weird and unnecessary, but here it is. take a looksie.

IMG_2643

okay, so i was seriously proud of myself after making lunch yesterday. actually, i’m still proud of myself right now. not to toot my own horn (lies) but this blackened tempeh sandwich was AMAZING! and my raw salad was right up there with it.

IMG_2645

IMG_2647

IMG_2649

> sandwich: sprouted grains bread, vegenaise, dijon mustard, avocado, my SUPER tasty (and kind of charred…in a yummy way!) tempeh, and ketchup for dipping
> salad: grated beet, grated carrot, grated zucchini, cherry tomatoes, chopped cucumber, fresh basil, evoo, balsamic vinegar, sea salt, and black pepper

a beet just can’t keep its color to itself! it’s gotta dye all the other veggies pink. but i’m not complaining. it adds a cheery vibrance, don’t you think? and sorry for the multitude of pictures. like i said, it gave me mucho pride and i felt the need to document its beauty from more than one angle. by the way, start adding basil to your salads! it makes all the difference! moooovin’ on now…my afternoon snack yesterday was also beauteous. i bought a couple of raw granolas from the bulk section of the co-op. so yum!

IMG_2650

probiotic soy yogurt (don’t worry…even though it’s probiotic, it’s vegan), fresh blueberries, raw austrian pumpkin granola

mmmm, the granola was perfectly sweet without being overbearing or sickly. it had a nice spice too. paired with the tart blueberries and the creamy, tangy yogurt…this snack was perfection! i love granola that comes in clumps. i also bought another flavor of raw granola yesterday. i tried it this morning! well, technically i tried it yesterday…in the store…when i stole a piece out of the bulk container…but shh, don’t tell. this granola will be in tomorrow’s post! let’s go to din din now, shall we?

IMG_2658

mexican millet from v’con, cheezy beans (pinto beans, sea salt, black pepper, nutritional yeast), sauteed spinach, bbq sauce

mmmm, mmmm, MMMM! i will without a doubt be making mexican millet again! both my mom and stepdad loved it too. it was moist, fluffy, chewy, and also kind of crunchy at the same time. and the flavor was excellent. if you have a copy of veganomicon…MAKE THIS! and also…who knew that pinto beans could taste so much better with just 3 simple ingredients added to them?! delicious dinner? check!

and then there was DESSERT!

IMG_2662

cherry amaretto coconut bliss topped with a few pieces of green & black’s 70% dark chocolate (my favorite dc)

how could that not be good?! i savored every last bite. by the way, green & black’s 70% dark chocolate is vegan. there was a little bit of controversy over this, since it’s produced on shared equipment with dairy products. therefore the company doesn’t mark it as vegan because there’s a slight chance of cross-contamination. there is no dairy in the actual chocolate, though. some vegans won’t eat anything manufactured with dairy products. as for me…i don’t live that way. as long as there are no animal ingredients listed in the nutritional information, i consider it safe. life is too short. hopefully that viewpoint doesn’t make me a bad vegan. to wrap this post up, wasn’t yesterday a fabulous day of eats?! 😀

have a STUPENDOUS saturday, everybody! thoughts on this post are still welcome. and on one last note, my co-op nor any of my whole foods have the new larabars yet. i even talked to the man who stocks the bar section. he wasn’t aware that new flavors are out, and is going to put a note in. but if they’re already available somewhere near YOU, or if you have access to any MINI larabars, and would like to do a little blogger package switch-a-roo, i’d be happy to trade some goodies of equal value for the larabars! that would be fun. let me know!
